How About a RED Flower Girl Dress?

How About a RED Flower Girl Dress?

In our experience as retailers of flower girl dresses, two colors are most controversial for flower girls. They are black and red. Black, it seems, has gained quite a bit of popularity when combined with pink, white, and other colors. This is with black as an accent color, an all black flower girl dress is still very unique in a tradeitional wedding. While black is considered a classic accent, we continue to see more flower girl dresses with red accents as well.

However, an ALL RED flower girl dress remains unusual. The challenge with the colors black and red for a flower girl dress, is that these colors are mentally connected with very adult and sometimes not very wholesome characteristics. Red is traditionally a color of sin (as in little red devil), passion, and the spilling of blood. Many a screen-star, comic book, or fiction femme-fatale and villian dresses in all black or red.

But surely, we can move beyond symbolic prejudices for such a beautiful color as red. In polls taken for favorite colors, red is very much a favorite in America. Red is also an important color of our flag, Christmas, Valentines.

The easy solution if you really want to have red flower girl dresses in your wedding is to plan a holiday wedding for either the Christmas, Valentine, or Fourth of July seasons.

If it is simply not your taste to marry with a holiday theme wedding, then select your red flower girl dresses carefully. Consider all red dresses that are very traditional in line, tea length, or have some whimsy such as tulle. As red is such a bright color, avoid red dresses with sharply contrasting lace in black or white, this may look "cheap" or resemble too much very adult intended lingerie. Go for all red, in the same shade, in a classic cut, with perhaps tulle accents (tulle and not patterned lace) in the same color red as the satin or silk. Avoid any very shiny red satins that may resemble lingerie too closely.

Another consideration to validate red as a classy color for your wedding party, is to have your bridesmaids in all red as well as the flower girl. Gentlemen in your wedding party may consider red vests, ties, and other accents to match.

Our feelings on red for flower girl dresses is that the color should be carefully applied to very classicly styled dresses that are young in cut (avoid form fitting A-lines and short dresses), be careful of contrasting accents with patterns (such as black or bright white lace). If red is your favorite color, then we also feel you should be able to incorporate red into your wedding theme with style and grace!

As always, there are exceptions to these general suggestions. We have one dress that is short, with a tulle applique top in black, and a red satin skirt. It is very much cut in a lingerie style. While this dress is not appropriate for younger flower girl dresses, it is very acceptable and tastefull for the preteen and tween aged flower girl dress. Why this dress is acceptable and not most others with the same colors, style, or accents is simply the arrangement and presentation visually. So, be sure to trust your own instincts or that of a classy dresser in your circle of family and friends. Remember, flwoer girls do not need to be attractive in an adult way nor are they mini pop stars, those images are completely in contrast to the intention of innocence and purity represented by a flower girl.
